Prue, Tabuns Garner Key Posts in NDP Shadow Cabinet
East Toronto MPPs reprise roles as Finance, Environment Critics
QUEEN’S PARK—East End NDP MPPs Michael Prue and Peter Tabuns continue their important roles in the newest edition of the NDP’s Shadow Cabinet. NDP Leader Howard Hampton has retained Prue as the party’s critic for Finance and tabbed the Beaches-East York MPP for oversight of Revenue, Research & Innovation, Community and Social Services and Democratic Renewal. Tabuns retains his role as Environment critic, and also holds responsibility for Energy, Citizenship and Immigration, Culture, and GTA Issues.
The announcement comes after the swearing-in of the NDP’s new team of MPPs, and ensures that the party and caucus are ready to address the priorities of Ontarians in the upcoming legislative session.
In his role as Finance Critic, Prue will continue his fight for a fairer property tax system, and will use his position as Community and Social Services critic to ensure that the new government keeps its commitments to reduce poverty in our province. In his role as Environment critic, Tabuns will continue to quarterback the NDP’s efforts to fight the McGuinty Liberals’ $40 billion nuclear megascheme and ill-conceived energy projects like the Portlands Energy Centre.
“I am proud that Michael and Peter are part of the NDP team at Queen’s Park. They are strong, effective and principled community representatives, and are strong voices for the people of East Toronto. Not only will they will continue to fight for the people of their ridings, but they’ll be effective voices for all of Ontario, as well,” Hampton said.
With Critic portfolios that speak directly to the concerns of municipalities, both MPPs are committed to redoubling their efforts to fight for a fairer deal for Ontario’s cities. Prue and Tabuns’ appointments were part of a general shuffle of critic roles. Critics speak in the Legislature and to the media about issues that fall under their portfolio, and they work with stakeholders, community members and their constituents to advocate for positive solutions.
