About Michael

Michael Prue has a long and distinguished career standing up for the people of our community. On September 20, 2001 Michael was first elected to the Ontario Legislature as the MPP for Beaches-York, winning a by-election to replace longtime MPP Frances Lankin.

Michael was first elected as an East York councillor in 1988. He went on to serve as East York's mayor from 1993 to 1997 until East York's forced amalgamation into the megacity. Michael then served his community as a councillor for the new City of Toronto before making the move to provincial politics.

Before starting his career in public office, Michael worked as counsel to the Minister of Employment and Immigration.

Throughout his career, Michael has stood firm for the things that matter. As a municipal representative, he helped maintain and expand investment in vital services such as police, transit, child care, children's programs, and the homeless. He supported city measures to improve housing for seniors, children, and the disabled. He voted against sending Toronto's garbage to Kirkland Lake and he was part of the NDP team that defeated the Adams Mine garbage proposal. When Mike Harris drastically cut municipal representation, Michael successfully fought to secure a third councillor's position for East York.

As mayor, Michael was widely respected for bringing in five consecutive budgets with no tax increase, cutting East York's debt by $7.8 million, and ushering in new industry, commercial growth, and jobs to the community. As an MPP, he continues his fight for fairness. In his role as an effective opposition critic, Michael has championed issues such as child poverty, a better deal for Ontario’s cities, improved conditions for people on social services, better investment in education and housing, and an overhaul of the property tax system.

Michael and his wife Shirley have lived in Beaches-East York for over 20 years. He has a BA from the University of Toronto in Political Science and Anthropology and an MA from Carleton University in Canadian Studies.
